Mylar balloons are made of multi-layer materials, plastic films, nylon, and a metallic coating fused together, making it hard to separate. Moreover, giving foil balloons is lightweight, but they can easily get tangled and jam the recycling machine and eventually shutting down operations. That is why mylar balloons are often rejected.

Therefore, if recycling isn’t available, plan for safe disposal by deflating the balloon and disposing of it with regular household trash rather than a curbside trash bin.

You can also look for the Balloon Mission or other TerraCycle Zero Waste Box options in your region. They take mylar balloons and similar films and turn them into new materials. Consider contributing or purchasing a box for a dedicated recycling stream.

Never release foil balloons outdoors since they can end up in a landfill and remain there for a very long time, or harm wildlife and cause power outages as they conduct electricity.
