Inhaling a small amount of helium from a balloon may cause a funny change in voice, temporary dizziness, or lightheadedness. However, inhaling too much helium gas can be dangerous: Helium replaces oxygen in your lungs, which means your body can’t get enough oxygen. In severe cases, this can cause fainting, loss of consciousness, or even suffocation.

Never inhale helium directly from a helium tank; the high pressure can cause lung injury and air embolism.
